Bed Bug Remediation

Bed bugs are not a housekeeping problem. They’re a biology problem. Cimex lectularius — the common bed bug — feeds on sleeping humans, injects a natural anesthetic so you don’t feel it, then retreats into cracks and seams to digest for 5 to 7 days before returning. They don’t discriminate by zip code or property type. Hotels, apartments, single-family homes across Los Angeles, the San Gabriel Valley, and surrounding counties — if there are people sleeping, there’s a potential host.

The resurgence of bed bugs over the past two decades traces to increased global travel, widespread insecticide resistance, and the ease with which infested items move between locations. A single infested piece of secondhand furniture or a suitcase from the wrong hotel room is all it takes.

Bed bug control requires a structured IPM approach — inspection, preparation, targeted treatment, and follow-up monitoring. There is no shortcut. Janus has the protocol, the products, and the follow-through to get it done right.

How Janus Treats Bed Bug Infestations

Inspection

Bed bugs concentrate where people sleep and rest. We systematically inspect mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, sofas, and upholstered furniture — along with baseboards, picture frames, and wall voids nearby. Findings are documented and used to map the treatment plan.

Canine Detection

For large commercial properties, multi-unit buildings, hotels, and cases where a standard inspection hasn’t resolved the question, Janus can bring in a certified K-9 detection team. Canine teams are accurate, fast, and effective at locating infestations in spaces too large or complex for visual inspection alone.

Traditional & Green Chemistry

Where chemical treatment is indicated, we apply professional-grade residuals, IGRs, and desiccant dusts targeted to harborage zones. For clients who prefer reduced-risk options, eco-friendly formulations are available — same precision, lower chemical footprint.

Steam & HEPA Vacuum

Steam penetrates mattress seams, furniture joints, and harborage zones — killing all life stages on contact. HEPA vacuuming follows to physically remove dead bugs, eggs, and debris. Together, they form the mechanical backbone of an effective bed bug service.

Heat Treatment & Fumigation

Whole-room heat treatment raises ambient temperature to levels lethal to bed bugs at all life stages — including eggs. For the most severe infestations, fumigation is also available. Both are subcontracted through licensed, bonded providers and recommended when standard treatments have been exhausted or site conditions require it.

Post-Treatment Monitoring

After treatment, Janus deploys bed bug interceptors and SenSci Volcano monitors paired with SenSci ActivCR lures — Rutgers University-developed attractants that draw bed bugs in by replicating skin surface chemicals. Active lure monitors capture up to twice as many bugs as passive traps alone, confirming elimination and catching rebound activity before it reestablishes.

Canine Bed Bug Inspection

Certified K-9 detection teams locate bed bug infestations with speed and accuracy — particularly effective in large commercial properties, multi-unit buildings, and early-stage infestations where visual inspection may fall short. Canine teams are third-party certified and handler-licensed through the California Structural Pest Control Board.

ProTip: Avoiding Bed Bugs When You Travel

Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. A few minutes of awareness before you unpack can prevent a months-long problem at home.

Check the sleep zone first. Pull back the sheets and inspect mattress seams and box spring corners for small dark stains or translucent shed skins — early signs of activity.

Check the furniture. Look behind the headboard, under bedside lamps, and along the seams of any upholstered chairs or sofas in the room.

Keep luggage off the bed. Stage your suitcase on the tile bathroom floor or a luggage rack — avoid hollow-legged racks, which are prime hiding spots. For extra security, keep luggage inside a sealed plastic bag during your stay.

When you get home. Wash and dry all travel clothing at the highest heat setting before putting anything away.

At Janus Pest Management, we recognize that effective bed bug control requires more than perimeter sprays — it requires understanding how the species exploits its environment to establish and persist in otherwise well-maintained properties.
