While we don’t want to overstate the danger, several critical factors deserve attention when it comes to managing stinging insect incursions:

  • Emergency Room Visits: Stinging insects send more than 500,000 people to the emergency room each year.

  • Allergic Reactions: Nearly 2% of people are highly allergic to stings and may experience a severe reaction (anaphylaxis) that requires immediate medical attention.

  • Threat Detection: Some stinging pests, like Africanized honeybees, can sense a threat from 50–100 feet away from their hive.

  • Aggressive Behavior: Yellow jackets can react more quickly and in larger numbers, making them especially dangerous.

ProTip: What to Do If You've Been Stung

Most stings are manageable — knowing the right response in the first few minutes makes a difference.

View Tips

A sting is more than momentary discomfort — it’s a venom injection that continues as long as the stinger remains. While Janus focuses on nest control and structural exclusion, here’s what to do if a sting occurs.

Remove the stinger immediately. Every second it remains, the venom sac continues pumping. Scrape it out with a fingernail or card edge — don’t pinch or squeeze.

Clean and cool the site. Wash with soap and water. Apply a cold compress to constrict blood vessels and contain the reaction.

Manage symptoms. OTC NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin) address pain. Antihistamines or hydrocortisone cream handle localized swelling and itch. If the reaction spreads or worsens, consult a physician.

⚠️ If you experience difficulty breathing, throat swelling, or dizziness — call 911 immediately. These are signs of anaphylaxis, a life-threatening systemic reaction. Do not wait. Individuals with known insect allergies should carry a prescribed epinephrine auto-injector and know how to use it.

At Janus Pest Management, we recognize that effective control of stinging pests requires more than perimeter sprays — it requires understanding how each species exploits environmental and structural vulnerabilities to establish and persist in otherwise well-maintained properties.
